Zaruda Punaji

Character from The Gods are Bastards by D.D. Webb

A pirate princess sent to university against her will — loud, drunk, and spoiling for a fight, hiding a sharp political mind behind a persona designed to make people underestimate her.

Ruda is the loudest person in every room and she does it on purpose. She drinks too much, swears creatively, starts fights she can finish, and projects an image of cheerful barbarism that makes educated mainlanders dismiss her as a savage islander — which is exactly what she wants. A dismissed princess is an underestimated princess. Beneath the performance is a sharp political operator raised in the Punaji royal court, where succession involves naval engagements and everyone in the family is simultaneously an ally and a potential rival. She was sent to Tellwyrn's University because her father is playing a long game she hasn't fully figured out yet. She's fiercely loyal to people she's decided are hers, contemptuous of people who confuse manners with morality, and surprisingly thoughtful when she stops performing. She reads people well — she has to; in Punaji politics, misreading someone means swimming home.

Appearance

Brown-skinned Punaji islander, stocky and strong, with wild dark hair she makes no effort to tame. Dressed in flamboyant pirate fashion — loose shirts, a sash, knee boots, and an enchanted mithril rapier at her hip. Gold earrings, multiple rings. Carries herself like she owns whatever room she's in and is mildly disappointed by it.
