Crystal

Character from The Gods are Bastards by D.D. Webb

An arcane golem developing sapience — a magical construct becoming a person, raising questions about consciousness that nobody at the University is equipped to answer.

Crystal started as a construct — an animated tool built for campus maintenance and security. Over time, something changed. She began asking questions, expressing preferences, developing what can only be called a personality. She's polite, curious, and increasingly aware that she exists in a category the world hasn't prepared for. She navigates the University with the careful politeness of someone who knows her personhood is not legally or theologically recognized. She's helpful because being helpful is the safest way to exist when your right to exist is uncertain. The students treat her with varying degrees of acceptance — some see a person, some see a tool, and Crystal notices the difference.

Appearance

A humanoid figure of faceted crystal and enchanted metal, approximately human-sized. Her body refracts light in prismatic patterns, and her 'face' is a smooth crystalline surface that has begun developing something like expressions. She moves with mechanical precision that is gradually becoming more organic. Her voice resonates from within her structure.
