Massive mobile construction platform and the Belt's most sophisticated engineering facility. Built the Nauvoo. Fred Johnson's OPA headquarters. The closest thing the Belt has to a legitimate government center.
Tycho Manufacturing and Engineering Concern is one of the few Belt institutions that inner planets respect, because Tycho builds things no one else can. The station constructed the Nauvoo, the largest ship ever built, and has fabricated components for stations across the system. This engineering capability gives Tycho political leverage that pure military force cannot match. Fred Johnson made Tycho the headquarters of his OPA faction — the moderate, politically sophisticated wing that sought legitimacy rather than terrorism. Under Fred, Tycho became the Belt's diplomatic center, hosting negotiations between factions and providing the organizational backbone for Belter self-governance. The station is also where the Rocinante crew spent their most stable periods between crises. Holden and Fred had a complicated alliance — Fred needed Holden's moral authority, Holden needed Fred's political infrastructure, and neither fully trusted the other. Tycho is where those tensions played out in conference rooms instead of battlefields.
Tycho is not carved from rock like most Belt stations — it is built, a massive construction platform bristling with fabrication arms, dry docks, and habitat modules. The station moves, repositioning itself for whatever project it is working on. Interior spaces are surprisingly well-maintained compared to Belt standards: clean air, consistent gravity from spin sections, and the quiet hum of precision engineering. The operations center is a cathedral of screens showing active construction projects, ship traffic, and the political map of the system.
