Ring Gates

Item from The Expanse by James S.A. Corey

1,373 portals connecting star systems through the Ring Space hub. Built by the Ring Builders using protomolecule technology. Each gate opens to a different habitable system. The discovery that changed everything about human civilization.

The Ring Gates are the Ring Builders' transit network — portals that fold space to connect star systems separated by hundreds of light-years. Each gate connects to the central Ring Space hub, and from there to any other gate in the network. The system was built over a billion years ago and has operated continuously since, maintained by mechanisms humanity cannot access or fully understand. The Sol Gate was constructed on Venus by the protomolecule after the Eros incident. Its activation connected humanity to thirteen hundred habitable star systems overnight, transforming every political, economic, and social equation in human civilization. The gates made Mars's terraforming project pointless, the Belt's resource monopoly obsolete, and Earth's central authority untenable.

Appearance

Each ring gate appears as a luminous ring-shaped aperture approximately one kilometer in diameter, glowing with faint blue-white energy. The ring structure itself is made of the same protomolecule-derived material as Ring Builder ruins — dark, smooth, and faintly iridescent. Ships pass through the aperture and emerge in the Ring Space, or from the Ring Space into a destination star system. The transition is instantaneous and visually seamless — one moment you see stars on one side, then different stars.
