Protomolecule Hybrid

Item from The Expanse by James S.A. Corey

Human-protomolecule soldiers created by Jules-Pierre Mao's weapons program. The protomolecule uses human bodies as chassis, producing fast, tough, nearly unkillable combat units. Children with compromised immune systems were used as hosts.

The hybrids are what happens when someone tries to weaponize the protomolecule using human bodies as a substrate. Mao's researchers, led by Dr. Strickland, found that children with compromised immune systems were the most compatible hosts — their bodies offered less resistance to protomolecule integration. The children were kidnapped from Ganymede's pediatric facilities. The resulting soldiers are devastatingly effective: faster than humans, resistant to conventional weapons fire, and driven by protomolecule programming that makes them relentless. They were deployed on Ganymede as a proof of concept, destroying both UN and MCRN units before being neutralized. The hybrids represent humanity's worst impulse — the willingness to sacrifice children to build a better weapon.

Appearance

A human body transformed beyond recognition — musculature grotesquely enhanced, skin split and reformed with blue-black protomolecule growth threading through flesh. Eyes glow faintly. Movement is wrong: too fast, joints bending at angles human anatomy doesn't support. Some retain vaguely human silhouettes; others are distorted into shapes that suggest the protomolecule is optimizing for function rather than form. They radiate heat and low-level radiation.
