The protomolecule is not a weapon, not a tool, not a life form — it is a set of instructions. Launched at Earth's solar system when life on the planet was still single-celled, it was meant to arrive, consume the planet's biomass, and build a ring gate connecting Sol to the Ring Builder network. It missed Earth and was captured by Saturn, sitting in Phoebe's ice for two billion years until humans found it. It repurposes biological matter at the molecular level, disassembling organisms and rebuilding them according to programming older than multicellular life. On Eros, it consumed over a hundred thousand people. On Venus, it built the Sol Ring Gate. In Laconia's orbital platforms, it builds warships.
