Item from The Expanse by James S.A. Corey
Laconian superweapon mounted on Magnetar-class battlecruisers. Protomolecule-enhanced beam weapon that can destroy any conventional warship in a single discharge. Changed the balance of power in human space permanently.
The magnetar weapon is the technological argument for Laconian supremacy. A single discharge can destroy a capital warship, and no conventional defense — armor, PDCs, ECM — can stop it. When the Tempest entered Sol system armed with this weapon, it defeated the combined Earth-Mars-Belt fleet alone, proving that protomolecule-derived technology had made conventional military power obsolete. The weapon operates on principles derived from Ring Builder physics — magnetic field manipulation at energy levels human technology cannot achieve independently. Laconia's engineers learned to operate the weapon through the orbital construction platforms, but understanding how it works remains beyond human science. They are using a tool they did not build and cannot fully explain.
Mounted along the spine of Magnetar-class ships, the weapon array is an elongated structure of protomolecule-derived material that pulses with faint blue luminescence even when dormant. When firing, it projects a beam of focused magnetic energy that is visible as a searing line of white-blue light. The discharge creates electromagnetic effects that disrupt electronics across a wide area. The weapon looks alien because it is — built in Ring Builder shipyards using technology humanity operates but does not understand.
