Before the Epstein drive, humanity was confined to Earth and Luna. Solomon Epstein's modified fusion drive achieved efficiency levels that made transit times between planets weeks instead of years, opening the entire solar system to human settlement. Epstein himself died during the first test — the drive worked too well, accelerating his yacht beyond his ability to shut it down. The drive defined the solar system's political geography. Mars became independent because ships could reach it practically. The Belt was colonized because ships could supply it. Every faction's military power is measured in how many Epstein-equipped ships it can field. The technology is so foundational that it is invisible — like electricity, it is simply assumed.
The drive cone dominates the stern of every ship — a magnetic nozzle directing superheated plasma from a fusion reaction. Under thrust, the cone blazes blue-white, a pillar of fire pushing the ship forward. The drive assembly is the largest single component on most vessels, surrounded by magnetic containment rings, fuel pellet injectors, and cooling systems. The engineering spaces around an Epstein drive hum with contained power and smell of ozone and hot metal.
