Teresa Duarte

Character from The Expanse by James S.A. Corey

Duarte's teenage daughter who grows up in the Laconian palace, gradually realizes her father is a monster, and allies with Amos to escape. A POV character caught between love and horror.

Teresa is raised as a princess in a gilded cage. Her father is the most powerful man in human history, and her childhood is tutors, security details, and the dawning realization that the kind, thoughtful man who reads her bedtime stories also orders planets bombarded. She loves him — he's her father — and this makes the truth unbearable. Her world cracks open when she befriends Amos Burton, who is exactly the kind of person her father's empire was built to control. Amos treats her like a person rather than a political asset, which is novel enough to be revolutionary. As Duarte's protomolecule transformation accelerates and he becomes a living statue on his throne, Teresa must choose between the empire that raised her and the people trying to dismantle it. Her escape from Laconia is a coming-of-age story set against apocalyptic stakes.

Appearance

Teenage girl with dark hair and her father's grey eyes, dressed in the expensive but restrained clothing of Laconian aristocracy. Has the poised bearing of someone raised by protocol officers and tutors, occasionally broken by flashes of genuine teenage awkwardness. Slim build, still growing into her features. Her face shifts between the composed mask she's been trained to wear and the frightened kid underneath.
