Shed Garvey

Character from The Expanse by James S.A. Corey

Canterbury medic who survived the ship's destruction only to die aboard the Rocinante when a railgun round took his head off. His sudden death establishes the series' lethal stakes.

Shed is a minor character whose death is a major moment. He's the Canterbury's medic — competent, unremarkable, the kind of person who fills a necessary role on a ship without anyone thinking much about it. He survives the Canterbury's destruction, ends up aboard what becomes the Rocinante, and is killed during the Donnager battle when a railgun round breaches the hull and decapitates him mid-sentence. His death is sudden, arbitrary, and un-dramatic — exactly how death works in space combat. There's no heroic last stand, no meaningful final words. One moment he's there, the next he isn't. The remaining crew's shock establishes the tone for the entire series: space is unforgiving, death is random, and being a main character doesn't guarantee survival. Shed is important because he dies, and the way he dies tells the reader what kind of story this is.

Appearance

Young, nervous-looking man with the demeanor of someone who became a medic because he wanted to help people, not because he wanted adventure. Unremarkable features, slightly anxious expression. Wears standard ship crew clothing.
