He's the face of Mars for the Rocinante crew before the Donnager battle, and his death during the stealth ship attack establishes the stakes. He dies doing his job, defending his ship against an enemy nobody expected. He represents the ordinary soldiers who die in the opening moves of wars started by people who will never face combat themselves.
