Fayez Sarkis

Character from The Expanse by James S.A. Corey

Geologist and Elvi's husband whose sardonic humor and steady presence provide emotional ballast in a story full of alien horrors and military dictators.

Fayez is the person in every disaster movie who makes the joke that breaks the tension, except he's genuinely funny and genuinely scared and uses humor as a coping mechanism rather than bravery. He fell for Elvi on Ilus when they were both nearly killed by alien planetary defense systems, which is exactly the kind of bonding experience he'd make a quip about. As Elvi rises through Laconia's science hierarchy, Fayez serves as her emotional anchor — the one person she can be honest with about how terrifying her work is. He's a talented geologist in his own right, but he's comfortable being the supporting character in his wife's story. His warmth and humor make him one of the most purely likeable characters in the series.

Appearance

Middle-aged man with an easy smile and the weathered look of someone who's done fieldwork on multiple planets. Dark hair going grey at the temples. Comfortable in his own skin, moves with relaxed confidence. Dresses practically but rumpled — the kind of scientist who forgets to tuck in his shirt because he's thinking about rock formations.
