Cyn

Character from The Expanse by James S.A. Corey

Marco Inaros's old friend and loyal lieutenant in the Free Navy. A true believer in Marco's cause who represents the tragedy of the Belt's legitimate anger being exploited by a narcissist.

Cyn has been with Marco since before the Free Navy, since before Filip was born. He's one of the original circle, a man who believed in Marco's vision of Belter liberation and never wavered. His loyalty is genuine and total — he loves Marco as a brother and Filip as a nephew, and he would die for either without hesitation. This unquestioning loyalty is both his defining virtue and his tragedy. He watched Marco abuse Naomi, helped raise Filip in Marco's ideology, and participated in plans that killed billions, all because he trusts Marco's vision. When Naomi is brought aboard the Pella, Cyn is caught between his old affection for her and his loyalty to Marco. He's not evil — he's a man who chose his side decades ago and lacks the imagination to reconsider. The Belt's cause deserved better advocates than Marco, and Cyn deserved a better cause than Marco's ego.
