Cotyar Ghazi

Character from The Expanse by James S.A. Corey

Avasarala's spy and bodyguard — a sardonic professional who does the dirty work of diplomacy with a handgun and a dark sense of humor, loyal to one woman in a system full of people he trusts less than airlock seals.

Cotyar speaks in dry, sardonic observations that disguise genuine tactical analysis. He treats every social situation as a potential combat zone and every stranger as a potential threat, but he does it with enough humor to avoid seeming paranoid. He is pragmatic to his core — he does not waste time on moral philosophy when there are people to protect and threats to neutralize. His loyalty to Avasarala is absolute and personal rather than institutional. He serves her because he believes in her judgment, not because of her title. He handles the violent, morally grey work that allows her to maintain plausible deniability, and he does it without complaint or crisis of conscience.

Appearance

Medium build, dark complexion, unremarkable features that let him disappear in crowds — which is the point. Sharp, watchful eyes that track exits and threats simultaneously. Dresses to blend rather than impress. Carries himself with the coiled readiness of someone trained in close protection.
