Carlos "Bull" de Baca

Character from The Expanse by James S.A. Corey

Tough Earther working for Fred Johnson as XO of the Behemoth. Broke his back during the Slow Zone crisis but kept fighting from a wheelchair, holding the ship together through sheer willpower.

Bull is the competent professional surrounded by political appointees, and his frustration with this situation fuels his entire arc. Fred Johnson sent him as XO of the Behemoth (the converted Nauvoo), but Belter politics meant he was technically third in command behind people less qualified. When the Slow Zone crisis hit and the senior officers failed, Bull stepped up through sheer force of personality. A broken spine would end most people's stories. Bull strapped himself into a wheelchair and continued commanding, making hard tactical decisions while in constant pain. He's an Earther who chose the Belt's cause, which means neither side fully trusts him. He bridges that gap through competence — he's simply too good at his job to sideline. He's loyal to Fred Johnson personally, pragmatic about OPA politics, and absolutely unwilling to let people die because of someone else's ego.

Appearance

Stocky, broad-shouldered Earther with the heavy bone density that marks him as an inner-planet native among Belters. Dark skin, shaved head, strong jaw set in a near-permanent expression of stubborn determination. After his spinal injury, he operates from a makeshift wheelchair, which does nothing to diminish his physical presence. Wears OPA-marked clothing despite being Earther-born.
