Basia Merton

Character from The Expanse by James S.A. Corey

Ganymede refugee turned Ilus colonist and POV character. A desperate father who makes terrible decisions for understandable reasons, embodying the human cost of interplanetary politics.

Basia lost his son Katoa on Ganymede — the boy was taken for protomolecule experiments and never returned. He fled with his surviving family to Ilus, hoping to start over on a new world. Instead, he found himself caught between corporate exploitation and colonial resistance, and his grief over Katoa made him susceptible to violent solutions. He helped destroy the RCE landing pad — an act of sabotage that killed people and set off the entire Ilus crisis. His POV chapters show the interior of a man who knows he's made terrible choices but can't see another path. He's not a terrorist by nature; he's a father who lost one child and will do anything to protect the rest. His arc is about living with consequences — how you go on after you've done something unforgivable for reasons that felt necessary.

Appearance

Broad-shouldered Belter with work-roughened hands and the tired eyes of a man carrying too much grief. Dark skin weathered by years of station life and colonial labor. Wears practical colonist clothing — patched, sturdy, functional. His body language shifts between defensive tension and exhausted resignation.
