The Outer Gates

Location from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

The boundary between reality and the Outside — a wall at the edge of everything, where the Winter Court's armies fight an eternal war against the Outsiders to keep reality from being consumed.

The Outer Gates are the boundary between reality — everything that exists within the mortal world and the Nevernever — and the Outside, which is something else entirely. The Gates are not a metaphor. They are a physical barrier at the edge of the Nevernever, a wall of ice and will and ancient power that stretches beyond sight in every direction, and behind them, the Outsiders press against reality with a hunger that has no analog in human experience. The Outsiders are not demons, not gods, not spirits. They are beings from outside the ordered universe, and their fundamental nature is antithetical to reality itself. They don't want to conquer the world — they want to unmake it. They want to dissolve the laws of physics, magic, and existence back into primordial chaos. Every moment of every day, they push against the Gates, and every moment of every day, someone pushes back. That someone is the Winter Court. This is Winter's true purpose — not politics, not Faerie games, not the petty machinations of the Court. Mab built the Winter Court into a military machine because she needs an army. The Winter Fae — ogres, trolls, rawheads, fetches, every monster that wears Winter's mantle — fight at the Outer Gates in an endless war that the mortal world doesn't know about. The Gatekeeper, Rashid, monitors the Gates. Winter's forces hold the line. If the Gates fall, everything falls. Harry Dresden has seen the Outer Gates. He doesn't talk about it much. What he saw there changed his understanding of what the word 'war' means.
