The spirit world — an infinite, mutable reality that overlaps the mortal world, where geography corresponds to emotional resonance and the Faerie Courts hold dominion over vast domains.
The Nevernever is everything that isn't the mortal world. It's the spirit realm, Faerie, the astral plane, the Outer Gates, and a thousand other domains compressed into a reality that operates on rules fundamentally different from mortal physics. Geography in the Nevernever corresponds not to physical distance but to emotional and spiritual resonance — a place of great violence in the mortal world might border a demon-haunted wasteland in the Nevernever, while a place of peace and beauty might open onto Summer's green fields. Wizards travel through the Nevernever using Ways — stable paths that connect two points in the spirit world, allowing rapid travel between distant locations in the mortal world. The Ways are not safe. Every path through the Nevernever passes through someone's territory, and the inhabitants of the spirit world do not appreciate trespassers. A wizard opening a Way needs to know exactly where they're going, what lives there, and what treaties govern passage. Getting lost in the Nevernever is not a navigation problem — it's a survival problem. The Faerie Courts dominate the largest and most organized domains. Winter and Summer divide much of the Nevernever between them, with Mab and Titania ruling their respective territories with absolute authority. But the Courts are not the only powers. The Erlking hunts through the wild spaces. The svartalves maintain their underground realm. Demons, angels, ghosts, and entities that defy categorization all have their territories. The Nevernever is infinite, and most of it has never been mapped by mortal wizards. At the far edge of the Nevernever — if 'edge' means anything in a place without consistent geometry — stand the Outer Gates, the boundary between reality and the Outside, where the Winter Court's true purpose is revealed: they are the army that holds the line against the Outsiders, forever.
The spirit world — a vast realm that overlaps mortal reality. Its geography corresponds to emotional and spiritual resonance. A battlefield in the mortal world might border a war-torn wasteland in the Nevernever. Doorways (Ways) connect the two, if you know where to look.
