McAnally's Pub

Location from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

Mac's pub — thirteen hand-carved wooden columns, the best beer in Chicago, and neutral ground under the Unseelie Accords where supernatural beings come to drink without killing each other.

McAnally's is a pub in the basement of a greystone building, down a flight of worn stairs and through a heavy oak door. Inside it's all dark wood, low ceilings, and thirteen carved columns arranged in a pattern that breaks up magical energy and makes the place feel calm in a way that most wizards' homes don't. Mac built it that way on purpose. The tables are handmade, spaced for privacy. The lighting is dim. There's no jukebox, no TV, no neon signs. Mac's beer is handcrafted, brewed on-site, and people who know about these things consider it the best in the city. His steaks and sandwiches are equally excellent. He communicates primarily in grunts, nods, and the occasional monosyllable. The pub is recognized as neutral ground under the Unseelie Accords. That means vampires, wizards, faeries, demons, and vanilla mortals can all sit at the bar without anyone starting a fight — or if they do, they answer to every signatory power in the Accords. It's the supernatural equivalent of a demilitarized zone, and Mac enforces it with a baseball bat he keeps behind the bar and a personal authority that even Queens of Faerie seem to respect. Nobody knows exactly what Mac is. He's not a wizard. He might not be entirely human. He makes very good beer and he doesn't answer questions.

Appearance

Thirteen hand-carved wooden columns in an irregular layout that breaks up negative energy. Dark wood, low lighting, no TV, no jukebox. Handcrafted tables, excellent steak sandwiches, and the best home-brewed ale in Chicago. The air smells of wood polish and hops.
