The Carpenter House

Location from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

Michael and Charity Carpenter's home — a big family house in suburban Chicago where seven kids play in the yard, dogs bark, cookies are baking, and angels literally stand guard at the property line.

The Carpenter house is a large, well-maintained family home in a quiet Chicago neighborhood. It looks exactly like what it is — a house full of kids, love, chaos, and the smell of whatever Charity is cooking. The yard is full of bikes, a tire swing, and the evidence of seven children at various stages of growing up. There's a workshop in the back where Michael keeps his tools — the regular kind, for his day job as a carpenter, and Amoracchius, the Sword of Love, which used to hang on the wall until he retired from active Knight duty. The supernatural defenses are invisible and absolute. The house sits under angelic protection — not wards, not magic, but the genuine attention of celestial beings who ensure that the home of a Knight of the Cross remains inviolate. Supernatural beings who approach with hostile intent find themselves unable to cross the property line. Not stopped — unable. The compulsion is gentle, irresistible, and operates on a level that even Queens of Faerie acknowledge. Harry has described the feeling of the house's threshold as the strongest he's ever encountered — a physical weight of love, family, and faith that makes his own apartment's defenses feel like a screen door. Harry comes here when he needs to remember what he's fighting for. The Carpenters take in strays — Harry, Thomas, Molly's friends, anyone who needs shelter. Charity makes sandwiches. Michael asks how you're doing and actually listens to the answer. It's the safest place in Chicago, and not because of the angels.

Appearance

Two-story craftsman house in a Chicago suburb. White picket fence. Kids' toys in the yard. Looks aggressively normal — except the wards are layered so thick a wizard can feel them from the sidewalk, and actual angels guard the property line.
