Item from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
Harry's enchanted black leather duster — layered with protective spells that make it practically equivalent to body armor, and half the reason people recognize him on the street.
Harry's leather duster is a full-length black leather coat that falls to his ankles and makes him look, in his own words, like a 'something out of El Dorado.' It's also one of the most effective pieces of protective equipment in Chicago, enchanted over years with layered defensive spells that harden the leather against impacts, disperse kinetic energy, resist cutting, and provide moderate protection against magical attacks. It's not invulnerable — sufficiently powerful magic or mundane weaponry can overwhelm the enchantments — but it's turned aside claws, blades, bullets, and magical blasts that would have killed an unprotected person. The duster is as much a part of Harry's identity as the staff. Six-foot-nine, black leather duster, carved wooden staff, and a general air of 'don't mess with me' — that's what people see when Harry Dresden walks down the street. The coat has been repaired, re-enchanted, and replaced nearly as many times as the staff. Each version is carefully layered with protective spells during weeks of laboratory work, each enchantment tied to a specific rune or sigil stitched into the leather's lining. Thomas once told Harry he looked like a gothic cowboy. Harry took it as a compliment. The coat serves the practical function of body armor and the equally practical function of making Harry look intimidating enough that some fights never start. In a profession where reputation matters — and for a wizard, it absolutely does — the duster is as much a weapon as any spell.
Ankle-length black leather duster, battered and worn. Enchanted to stop physical and magical attacks — practically body armor. Weighs more than normal leather. Smells like smoke and ozone. Harry's signature garment.
