The Red King

Character from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

Lord of the Red Court — an ancient vampire god-king whose millennia of power ended in a single night when Harry Dresden turned his own bloodline curse against his entire species.

The Red King ruled his Court from the ancient Mayan temple at Chichén Itzá with the absolute authority of a being who had existed since before written history. He was not a politician or a schemer — he was a force of nature, a predator so old that lesser vampires existed only at his sufferance. He approved the war against the White Council not because of Bianca's grievance but because he saw an opportunity to break wizard power forever. He orchestrated the bloodline curse ritual to destroy Harry's family line as a weapon against the White Council. Instead, Harry and his allies turned the curse back against the Red Court, using the Red King's own blood as the conduit. The curse killed every Red Court vampire in existence in a single cataclysmic moment. An entire supernatural nation, thousands of years of accumulated power, ended because their king underestimated one desperate father.

Appearance

Massive and ancient, his flesh mask barely containing the monstrous form beneath. In his true shape, a towering bat-like creature of terrifying power, radiating age and authority that predated most human civilizations. His court at Chichén Itzá was a temple of blood and darkness, Mayan architecture repurposed for vampiric ritual.
