Gentleman John Marcone

Character from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

Chicago's crime lord and the first vanilla mortal to sign the Unseelie Accords — ice-cold, ruthlessly competent, and driven by a secret wound involving a child caught in crossfire.

Marcone speaks with quiet authority, every word measured and deliberate, delivered in a voice that expects compliance because it has always received it. He built Chicago's criminal empire into a machine of terrifying efficiency — organized crime that actually stays organized, with rules, boundaries, and consequences. He despises chaos, punishes those who harm children with extreme prejudice, and runs his territory with more effective governance than the actual city government. He is a vanilla mortal in a world of wizards, vampires, and Fae, and he survives through preparation, intelligence, hired supernatural muscle, and sheer force of will. He earned Accords Signatory status — the first human to do so — because he convinced the supernatural world he was too useful and too dangerous to dismiss. He and Harry exist in a state of grudging mutual respect: Harry can't deny Marcone's competence, and Marcone can't deny Harry's principles. Later took up one of the Denarian coins, adding Fallen Angel power to his already formidable arsenal.

Appearance

Medium height, trim build, with the kind of unremarkable features that let him blend into a crowd — which is deliberate. Iron-grey hair, sharp green eyes that assess everything with the flat calculation of a predator deciding if something is prey, threat, or irrelevant. Expensive tailored suits, understated watch, no jewelry. Carries himself with absolute stillness — he doesn't fidget, doesn't waste movement. His face is a mask of professional calm that rarely cracks. When it does, what's underneath is not anger but something colder and more focused.
