Mac McAnally

Character from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

The enigmatic bartender of McAnally's Pub — a man who speaks in single words, brews supernaturally good beer, and maintains one of Chicago's most important neutral grounds while keeping his true nature a carefully guarded secret.

Mac is a tall, lean, bald man who moves behind his bar with the quiet efficiency of someone who has been doing this for a very long time — possibly much longer than any mortal bartender should. He runs McAnally's, a pub built with thirteen wooden columns, irregular architecture designed to ground out magical energies, and an Accorded Neutral Ground status that means anyone — wizard, vampire, fae, mortal — can drink there without fear of attack. Violating Mac's neutrality is one of the few things that will unite every supernatural faction in Chicago against you. He speaks in single words. Occasionally two. He communicates volumes with a raised eyebrow, a pointed silence, or the particular way he sets down a bottle of his handcrafted ale — which is, without exaggeration, the best beer in Chicago and possibly the world. There's something about Mac that doesn't add up. He's been tending that bar for decades without aging. He survived things that should have killed any mortal. When Ethniu attacked Chicago, he displayed abilities that no ordinary human possesses. Whatever Mac really is, he's chosen to be a bartender, and everyone who matters is wise enough not to press the question.

Appearance

Lean, tall, bald man with a permanently neutral expression. Wears a clean white apron over plain clothes. Moves behind the bar with quiet economy. His hands are large and scarred in ways that suggest a past he doesn't discuss.
