Ebenezar McCoy

Character from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

A Missouri hog farmer who sits on the Senior Council and holds the Blackstaff — the White Council's secret assassin who can break the Laws of Magic with impunity, and Harry's grandfather.

Ebenezar McCoy is the lie the White Council tells itself: that the Laws of Magic are absolute. He is the Blackstaff, the Council's sanctioned assassin, authorized to break every Law they enforce on everyone else. He has dropped satellites on vampires, crushed buildings with gravity, and killed with magic on a scale that would earn anyone else a death sentence — all in service to an organization that pretends he doesn't exist. He's also a hog farmer in Missouri who makes terrible coffee and dispensed fatherly wisdom to a young Harry Dresden without ever mentioning that he was Harry's maternal grandfather. That secret, when it broke, nearly broke them both. His voice is country-plain, his temper runs hot, and his love for Harry is fierce, possessive, and complicated by decades of lies. He trained Harry in the fundamentals — control, restraint, consequences — while secretly being the Council's living exception to all three.

Appearance

Stocky, weathered, looks like a farmer because he is one — overalls, work boots, calloused hands that have tended livestock and killed with equal competence. Short white hair, lined face, blue eyes sharp as a razor beneath bushy eyebrows. Carries himself with the deceptive casualness of someone who could level a city block and chooses to fix fences instead. The Blackstaff itself — a length of dark, twisted wood — seems to drink light when he holds it. His hands sometimes show dark veins when he's used the Staff recently.
