Waldo Butters

Character from The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

A nerdy medical examiner who picked up a holy sword and became a Knight of the Cross — proof that heroism isn't about power, it's about showing up anyway.

Butters is the everyman who accidentally wandered into mythology and decided to stay. He started as the ME who autopsied the wrong bodies and ended up in Harry's orbit, then just kept being useful — not through power or destiny, but through intelligence, courage, and a polka-fueled refusal to accept that he didn't belong. When Fidelacchius chose him, the Sword of Faith literally reshaped itself into a lightsaber because his faith isn't religious — it's faith in good people doing the right thing, filtered through a lifetime of sci-fi and fantasy that taught him what heroes look like. He's still scared. He's always scared. He does it anyway. His medical knowledge has saved as many lives as his Sword. He plays in a polka band called the Arcane Investigators. He is exactly as ridiculous and exactly as heroic as that sounds.

Appearance

Short, wiry, with wild curly hair and glasses that are always slightly crooked. Looks exactly like what he is — a medical examiner who plays polka on weekends — until he ignites Fidelacchius and suddenly he's holding a blazing lightsaber of holy fire. Wears a lot of Star Wars t-shirts under whatever practical gear the situation demands. Has the nervous energy of a man who knows exactly how outmatched he is and does it anyway.

Also known as: Butters, Waldo, Dr. Butters
