The Bridge

Location from The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen

The only land route between two continents — a massive structure spanning island to island across a treacherous strait, the most strategically valuable piece of infrastructure in the world.

The bridge is the world's most important structure. It's the only land route connecting the northern and southern continents, which means all overland trade — and much of the maritime trade that uses the bridge's harbors — passes through Ithicana's control. Whoever holds the bridge controls the economic flow between two-thirds of the world's population. Defensively, the bridge is designed as a series of chokepoints: each island-to-island section can be sealed independently, turning the trade route into a killing ground. The fortifications are hidden, the troop positions are secret, and the defensive plans are known only to Ithicana's military leadership. When Lara exposed these secrets to Maridrina, she didn't just betray her husband — she destroyed the security architecture that had protected a kingdom for generations. The bridge is also infrastructure: it requires constant maintenance against storms, tides, and age. Ithicana's engineers and workers maintain it the way a nation maintains its only highway — because without it, the kingdom has no reason to exist.

Appearance

Not a single graceful arch but a massive, engineered stone-and-ironwood structure connecting multiple islands across a wide strait. Each section is a fortified passage — defensible, with guard posts, gates, and concealed positions that can be sealed to turn the bridge into a series of kill zones. The bridge has weathered centuries of storms and the sea batters its pillars constantly. It's beautiful in the way that fortifications are beautiful: purposeful, imposing, and designed to say 'turn back.'
