The divided border city — split by a river with Maridrinian soldiers on one bank and Valcottan soldiers on the other, where Keris and Zarrah meet in secret because the enemy across the water turns out to be the person you need most.
Nerastis is where the sequel series' central romance begins — the border city where the Maridrina-Valcotta conflict is most visible and most personal. Keris is stationed on the Maridrinian side; Zarrah commands on the Valcottan side. They meet by crossing the river in secret, each initially unaware of the other's true identity. The divided city is a perfect metaphor for the series' political theme: two peoples separated by a line drawn by rulers, discovering through personal contact that the enemy their governments describe doesn't match the person standing in front of them.
A city divided by a river — Maridrinian military installations on the north bank, Valcottan outposts on the south. The river is the border, the ceasefire line, and the obstacle that Keris and Zarrah cross in secret to meet. The city has the tense, watchful atmosphere of a permanent military standoff — soldiers on both sides maintaining the appearance of readiness for a war that neither side's common people actually want.
