Bridge Trade Tariffs

Item from The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen

The toll that funds a kingdom and fuels a war — every good crossing between continents pays Ithicana for the privilege, which makes the bridge worth more than any crown.

The bridge trade tariffs are the economic engine of the entire series' geopolitics. Ithicana controls the only overland route between continents and charges accordingly. This makes the kingdom wealthy, which makes it defensible, which makes it the target of every continental power. Maridrina's resentment of the tariffs is Silas's primary propaganda tool — he frames the invasion as economic liberation. The tariffs ARE genuinely burdensome to Maridrina's economy; they're also what fund Ithicana's existence. The series doesn't resolve this tension cleanly: there's no version of 'fair' that satisfies everyone when one small kingdom controls a continental chokepoint.

Appearance

The tariffs are economic rather than physical — a percentage extracted from every shipment crossing the bridge or using Ithicana's harbor facilities. The wealth they generate is visible in Ithicana's military capability, infrastructure, and the quality of life that a tiny island kingdom shouldn't be able to afford.
