Whisper

Character from The Black Company by Glen Cook

A new Taken — a Rebel general who was captured and turned, proving that the Lady's method for making Taken didn't die with the Dominator.

Whisper was a Rebel general — one of the opposition's best field commanders. The Lady captured her and performed the Taking, binding her through true-name magic the same way the Dominator bound the original Ten. This proves that the process still works, that the Lady can create new Taken, and that everyone fighting against the empire is a potential recruit. Her transformation from enemy to servant is one of the northern books' most disturbing moments — the person is recognizably the same, but the loyalty has been rewritten at a level deeper than personality. She serves competently. She doesn't appear to resist. The question of what's left of the original person inside a Taken is one Cook leaves unanswered.

Appearance

A military woman — competent, professional, with the bearing of a field commander. After being Taken, the competence remains but gains the unsettling edge that all Taken carry. She was a Rebel before; now she serves the Lady with the same efficiency she used to oppose her.
