Whisper was a Rebel general — one of the opposition's best field commanders. The Lady captured her and performed the Taking, binding her through true-name magic the same way the Dominator bound the original Ten. This proves that the process still works, that the Lady can create new Taken, and that everyone fighting against the empire is a potential recruit. Her transformation from enemy to servant is one of the northern books' most disturbing moments — the person is recognizably the same, but the loyalty has been rewritten at a level deeper than personality.
