The Limper

Character from The Black Company by Glen Cook

The most hated Taken — mean, vindictive, petty, unkillable, and nursing a grudge against the Black Company that outlasts multiple apparent deaths.

The Limper is the Taken the Black Company deals with most directly, and the relationship is pure mutual hatred. He's petty, vindictive, and holds grudges with a commitment that borders on art. The Company embarrassed him. He'll kill every one of them for it. They killed him. He came back. They killed him again. He came back again. This cycle is the series' most persistent subplot. He's a powerful sorcerer by any standard, but his defining trait isn't power — it's spite. He's the Taken most likely to pursue a personal vendetta at the expense of strategic objectives. The Lady keeps him in line through force and the knowledge that he fears her more than he hates the Company. Barely. His resilience is horrifying — he survives destruction that should be permanent, regenerating from stumps and fragments. You can't kill the Limper. You can only make him angrier.

Appearance

Limps — hence the name. The limp shifts from leg to leg depending on which body part was most recently destroyed and regrown. Wears dark robes, gives off an aura of seething malice. Every time you think he's dead, he comes back uglier.
