The Captain

Character from The Black Company by Glen Cook

Leader of the Black Company — never named, rarely described, always obeyed. He runs the outfit. That's what you need to know.

The Captain commands the Black Company during the northern books with the quiet authority of a man who doesn't need to raise his voice because everyone already knows the consequences. He makes decisions about who they serve, what contracts they take, and when to cut their losses. He's not a great warrior or a powerful sorcerer — he's a manager of violent men in violent situations, and he's good at it. Croaker records his decisions without always understanding them, which is the Annalist's admission that command involves calculations the physician doesn't see. The Captain dies during the northern wars, and his death is recorded with the spare grief that Cook allows: briefly, honestly, and then the Company moves on because that's what companies do.

Appearance

Cook barely describes him. He's the Captain. He looks like a man who's been commanding mercenaries for long enough that the job has become his face. Old enough to know better, tough enough not to care.
