Murgen

Character from The Black Company by Glen Cook

The Company's next Annalist after Croaker — a standard-bearer who inherited the journals and the obligation to write down things he'd rather forget.

Murgen becomes the Company's Annalist and standard-bearer in the southern books, taking over the Annals when Croaker can no longer maintain them. His narrative voice is different from Croaker's — more disoriented, plagued by out-of-body experiences that he doesn't fully understand, and struggling with the weight of recording events while participating in them. His out-of-body episodes — where his consciousness detaches and travels — are initially terrifying and gradually become a strategic asset. He can see things at a distance, which makes him the Company's most improbable reconnaissance tool.

Appearance

Lean, dark-haired, the look of a career soldier who's seen enough to know when to duck. Younger than Croaker when he takes over the Annals, which means his perspective is different — less world-weary, more confused.
