Howler

Character from The Black Company by Glen Cook

The Taken who screams — his sorcery comes with a sound so terrible it damages the mind, and he rides a flying carpet because even the Taken have style.

Howler is defined by his sound. His sorcery produces a psychic scream that damages the minds of those who hear it — not a side effect but a weapon. He can fly on his carpet, scream from above, and retreat before anyone can respond. He's the Taken's air force. He's smaller and physically less imposing than most Taken, which he compensates for with mobility and the fact that his primary weapon works at range and through walls. He's also more pragmatic than the Limper — he holds grudges but doesn't let them override professional judgment. Among the Taken, he's one of the more rational operators, which is a low bar but still notable.

Appearance

Small, bundled in layers of rags and robes, face hidden. The screaming comes from somewhere inside the wrappings. Rides a flying carpet — one of the few Taken to use airborne transport, making him the empire's fastest messenger and most terrifying air support.
