Darling

Character from The Black Company by Glen Cook

The White Rose reborn — a deaf-mute girl who generates an anti-magic field that grows as she matures, terrifying the Taken, raised by a mercenary, and destined to be the Rebel's best weapon against the Lady.

Darling is the null zone. She generates a field that cancels all sorcery in her vicinity — the Taken can't cast near her, the Lady can't see her through magical means, and every enchantment within her radius simply stops working. This makes her the most strategically important person in the war between the Lady and the Rebel, and the person every sorcerer in the world wants dead. Raven found her as a child — her family was killed in the war, and he took her in with a protectiveness that doesn't match anything else in his personality. She grows up in the Company, learning to be tough from people who fight for a living. When her identity as the reborn White Rose becomes clear, she transitions from Raven's ward to the Rebel's prophesied leader. Her muteness and her anti-magic field are thematically linked: she exists in silence, and she imposes silence on the magical world around her. She's the one person the Taken can't touch, the Lady can't spy on, and the Dominator can't influence. In a world run by sorcerers, she's the blind spot.

Appearance

Young when first encountered — grows into a woman across the series. Mute, scarred, with eyes that communicate what her voice can't. Plain-looking by the standards of a world that values sorcerous beauty, which is precisely the point — her power cancels beauty along with everything else magical. Blonde. Hard-faced from a hard life.
