Black Iron Palace

Location from Sword Art Online by Reki Kawahara

The game's administrative center on Floor 1 — home to the Monument of Life, the prison, and the daily reminder that the player count only goes down.

The Black Iron Palace is SAO's administrative heart and its most depressing location. The Monument of Life dominates the main hall — a giant stone slab with ten thousand names. Players come here to check on friends, to confirm deaths, and to watch the number slowly shrink. Some players sit in front of it for hours. The palace guards (NPCs) watch impassively. The basement contains prison cells where criminal players are held — PK-flagged players caught by the Army or other guilds. The cells suppress combat abilities but the prisoners are still alive, consuming resources, a problem nobody has a good answer for.

Appearance

A massive dark stone fortress in the center of the Town of Beginnings. It's the largest structure on Floor 1, built in a gothic style with iron gates and narrow windows. Inside, the main hall houses the Monument of Life — an enormous stone tablet listing every player's name. Crossed-out names glow faintly red.
