Item from Sword Art Online by Reki Kawahara
The VR headset that made full-dive virtual reality possible — and the microwave emitter strapped to ten thousand skulls that made the death game real.
The NerveGear is the most important piece of technology in the SAO universe. It intercepts motor signals from the brain and replaces sensory input with virtual data, creating a complete full-dive experience: sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, all simulated. It was revolutionary. It was also a weapon. Kayaba included high-powered microwave emitters in the helmet — the same transmitters that send sensory data to the brain. When overclocked, they can fry the brain's neural tissue in seconds. This is the death game's enforcement mechanism: die in SAO, the NerveGear kills you. Try to remove it, the NerveGear kills you. Someone cuts the power, the NerveGear's battery kills you. The NerveGear was discontinued after SAO and replaced by the safer AmuSphere, but its legacy defines every virtual world that follows. It proved that full-dive VR was possible. It also proved that technology this intimate with human consciousness is inherently a weapon.
A sleek, dark-colored helmet that covers the entire head, with a tinted visor and multiple electrode contact points. It looks like a premium gaming accessory — futuristic, ergonomic, and innocuous. There is nothing in its appearance that suggests it can kill you. Kayaba designed it that way on purpose.
