Sugou Nobuyuki

Character from Sword Art Online by Reki Kawahara

The man who imprisoned Asuna in a fairy cage and called it love — SAO's most despicable villain because his cruelty is ordinary, recognizable, and doesn't need a death game to justify itself.

Sugou is a different kind of villain than Kayaba — where Kayaba was a visionary whose methods were monstrous, Sugou is simply a predator who acquired power. He trapped 300 SAO survivors in ALO to experiment on their brains, and he kept Asuna personally because he viewed her as his property. There is no grand philosophy behind his actions, just entitlement and cruelty. He is the series' most hated character because he represents something real: the powerful man who believes he deserves what he wants and uses institutional authority to take it. His attempted assault on Asuna in ALO is the series' darkest moment precisely because it doesn't require fantasy logic to be horrifying. He crumbles when confronted by someone who can actually fight back. He is a bully, not a warrior.

Appearance

Tall and conventionally attractive with light hair and glasses in real life — the kind of professional appearance that opens doors. As Oberon in ALO, he gave himself a fairy king avatar of excessive beauty: golden hair, regal robes, and a crown. The contrast between the polished exterior and the predator underneath is the point.

Also known as: Oberon the Fairy King, Fairy King Oberon, Sugou
