Death Gun

Character from Sword Art Online by Reki Kawahara

A phantom from SAO's murder guild who found a way to kill through screens — proof that the death game's trauma didn't end when the servers shut down.

Death Gun is actually a collaboration between three former Laughing Coffin members — Shinkawa Shouichi (XaXa) planned it, his brother injected the real-world victims with succinylcholine while they were immobilized in VR, and a third member provided logistics. The in-game persona is a terror campaign: by appearing to kill players through the screen, they created a legend that gave them power over GGO's entire player base. The horror of Death Gun isn't the murder method — it's that the plan only works because SAO taught thousands of people that dying in a game means dying for real. Death Gun weaponized trauma. The Laughing Coffin members who created him never stopped being killers; they just found a new game.

Appearance

In GGO, Death Gun wears a tattered dark cloak and a skull mask over metallic armor, wielding a black pistol — the Type 54 'Black Star' — that he claims can kill players in real life. The avatar is deliberately designed to invoke fear: the grim reaper with a gun. In real life, the Shinkawa brothers are unremarkable teenagers, which makes the costume scarier.
