Ness

Character from Smash Bros Brawl: The Subspace Emissary by Nintendo / Masahiro Sakurai

A psychic boy from Onett who is trophied by Wario before the real fight even begins — then revived by Dedede's brooch to become one of the first heroes back on their feet.

Ness barely gets to fight before the Subspace Emissary takes him off the board. At the Ruined Zoo, he saves Lucas from a Porky statue — arriving heroically, fighting competently — and then Wario shoots him with a Dark Cannon from behind. No warning, no dramatic last stand. Just a cheap shot and a trophy. But this early removal makes his return more impactful. Dedede's timer brooch revives Ness inside Subspace itself, alongside Luigi. They find Dedede's trophy, revive him, and the three of them — a psychic kid, a scared plumber, and a penguin king — begin the resurrection chain that saves everyone. Ness fights with a baseball bat, a yo-yo, and PSI powers that manifest as bolts of light and fields of energy. He is cheerful and aggressive in combat — swinging wide, yelling silently, throwing himself at enemies with the fearlessness of a kid who has already saved the world once before.

Appearance

A small boy in a red baseball cap worn backwards, a striped blue and yellow t-shirt, blue shorts, and red sneakers. Carries a baseball bat and a yo-yo. His eyes are solid black dots — simple but expressive through context. Moves with a child's boundless energy, constantly shifting weight and looking around. His PSI powers manifest as colorful geometric patterns.
