King Dedede

Character from Smash Bros Brawl: The Subspace Emissary by Nintendo / Masahiro Sakurai

A scheming penguin king who appears to be stealing trophied fighters — until it becomes clear he was the only one with a plan to survive Tabuu's apocalypse.

King Dedede is the Subspace Emissary's most complex character. He appears to be a villain — he ambushes Luigi with his Waddle Dees, slams him into trophy form with his hammer, and hoards captured fighters in his castle. When Bowser storms the castle and steals his collection, Dedede seems like just another loser in the villain hierarchy. But Dedede was never hoarding trophies for power. He was saving them. He had learned about Tabuu's Off Waves — the attack that would petrify every fighter simultaneously — and he created the Dedede Brooches: timer badges that automatically revive trophied fighters after a delay. He pinned them to Luigi and Ness before Tabuu struck. When the Off Waves hit and every hero falls, it is Dedede's brooches that bring Luigi and Ness back first. They find Dedede's own trophy, realize what he did, and revive him. The moment Dedede comes back to life, he hugs Kirby — his lifelong rival — with unrestrained joy. He was afraid. He planned anyway. He is the reason anyone survived.

Appearance

A large, rotund penguin-like creature in a red and gold royal robe with a sash, wearing a peace sign on his hat. Round body, stubby arms, and a face dominated by a wide beak often curved into a mischievous or self-satisfied grin. Carries a massive wooden hammer that he swings with surprising speed. His movements are heavy and theatrical — everything he does looks like he is performing for an audience.
