Hawkins High School

Location from Stranger Things by The Duffer Brothers

The town's only high school — a brick institution where teenage drama collides with supernatural horror and social hierarchies prove almost as brutal as Demogorgons.

Hawkins High is where the Party grows up and where the social fault lines of small-town Indiana play out in miniature. It is a place of cliques and cruelty — jocks vs. nerds, insiders vs. outsiders — and its hierarchies mirror the show's larger themes of who gets believed and who gets dismissed. Nancy Wheeler fought to be taken seriously by the school paper. Eddie Munson was hunted by a mob of his own classmates. Chrissy Cunningham died in Eddie's trailer after seeking him out in desperation. Max Mayfield was targeted by Vecna within its walls. The school is ordinary in the most painful way: it is where kids learn that the world is unfair long before they learn that it's also full of monsters.

Appearance

A flat-roofed brick building typical of Midwestern public schools, built in the '60s and barely updated since. Long fluorescent-lit hallways lined with orange lockers, trophy cases celebrating basketball championships, and bulletin boards advertising prom and pep rallies. The gym smells like floor wax and sweat. The parking lot is a sea of wood-paneled station wagons and beat-up Camaros. In Season 4, memorial banners hang for those lost in the 'Starcourt fire,' and Vecna's curse turns the school into a hunting ground.
