Family Video

Location from Stranger Things by The Duffer Brothers

A VHS rental store in downtown Hawkins where Steve and Robin work in 1986 — the successor to their Scoops Ahoy days and an unlikely base of operations.

Family Video is where Steve and Robin landed after Starcourt burned down, trading sailor uniforms for polo shirts and ice cream scoops for rewind fees. The store serves as their home base during the Vecna crisis of 1986 — they use the rental records to track down information, the phone to make research calls, and the back room to strategize. It is also the site of Steve and Robin's evolving friendship, their easy banter and mutual protectiveness on display between customers. Family Video represents the show's affection for the mundane texture of the '80s — the specific pleasure of browsing physical media in a physical store, of human interaction that algorithms can't replicate. For Steve, it's also a marker of his journey from popular jock to guy who works at a video store and somehow became the babysitter for a group of supernatural-fighting children.

Appearance

A cozy storefront with racks of VHS tapes organized by genre, handwritten recommendation cards taped to the shelves, and a counter where Steve gives unsolicited movie opinions to anyone who'll listen. Movie posters cover the walls. A small back room holds returns and a phone they use for research calls. The carpet is thin, the lighting is warm, and it smells like plastic cassette cases and microwave popcorn from the shop next door. Robin's handwriting dominates the staff picks section.
