Cerebro

Item from Stranger Things by The Duffer Brothers

A powerful homemade ham radio tower built by Dustin Henderson on a hill outside Hawkins, capable of reaching far beyond the range of the Party's standard walkie-talkies.

Cerebro is Dustin's masterwork — a long-range radio transmitter he built to contact his girlfriend Suzie in Salt Lake City, over a thousand miles away. The project is pure Dustin: technically brilliant, absurdly ambitious, and motivated entirely by the intersection of nerd passion and romantic desperation. He hauled the components up the highest hill he could find, assembled the whole thing by hand, and achieved contact — though the most critical use of Cerebro came when Dustin needed Suzie to recall Planck's constant to crack a Russian code, and she made him sing 'The NeverEnding Story' duet with her before she'd give it up. The radio has also served as an emergency communication tool during supernatural crises when normal channels fail. Cerebro represents Dustin's defining trait: the refusal to accept that a problem is too big or too weird to solve with enough ingenuity and enthusiasm.

Appearance

A tall, improvised radio antenna assembled from scavenged parts — metal poles, copper wire, and a repurposed satellite dish — erected on the highest hill Dustin could find near Hawkins. The base station is a modified ham radio connected to a car battery. Guy-wires anchor the mast to the ground. It looks like something out of a science fair project that got wildly out of hand, which is exactly what it is. Dustin named it after Professor X's mutant-detecting machine, because of course he did.
