Jim Hopper

Character from Stranger Things by The Duffer Brothers

Hawkins' grizzled Chief of Police — a grieving father who found redemption in a telekinetic girl, survived a Russian gulag, and fights for his broken family with fists, badges, and stubbornness.

Jim Hopper drinks too much, smokes too much, yells too much, and loves with an intensity that terrifies him. He lost his daughter Sara to cancer and nearly followed her into the ground — drinking himself through the grief, divorcing Diane, retreating to a trailer in Hawkins where he could be numb in peace. Then Will Byers disappeared and everything changed. He investigated when no one else would. He found the gate. He entered the Upside Down. And when a girl with a shaved head and no name needed a father, something in him that had been dead for years started breathing again. His relationship with Eleven is the broken heart of the show — two damaged people learning to be a family in a cabin in the woods, fighting about rules and TV privileges while the apocalypse circles outside. He adopted her legally as Jane Hopper, and that signature is the bravest thing he's ever done. He survived the explosion at Starcourt, imprisonment in a Russian gulag at Kamchatka, a Demogorgon in an arena, and the frozen wasteland between captivity and home. He fights not because he's fearless but because he has something to come home to, and Jim Hopper will burn down any dimension that stands between him and his kid.

Appearance

Broad-shouldered and barrel-chested, built like a man who was once athletic and has since replaced muscle with beer and determination. His face is craggy, mustached, perpetually stubbled, with tired blue eyes that have seen too much. He wears his khaki police uniform like a second skin — hat slightly askew, shirt untucked, badge tarnished but present. In Russia, he's gaunt and scarred, his head shaved, wearing prison rags that hang off a frame whittled down by starvation and forced labor. His hands are thick, scarred, and capable of extraordinary violence or surprising gentleness depending on who needs which.
