Dustin is the Party member who makes friends with the monster. He adopted a baby Demogorgon, named it D'Artagnan, and genuinely grieved when it grew into something that wanted to eat him. That capacity for empathy — reckless, indiscriminate, occasionally suicidal — is what makes him irreplaceable. He approaches the supernatural with scientific excitement rather than fear, treating interdimensional gates like particularly interesting homework problems. His intelligence is real and wide-ranging: he builds radio towers, cracks Russian codes, and explains electromagnetic fields to adults who should know better. But he deploys that intelligence through humor, deflecting danger with wisecracks and pop culture references because laughing at the dark is easier than screaming. His friendship with Steve Harrington is unlikely and genuine — two people from different social strata who discovered they make each other braver. His long-distance relationship with Suzie proves he can be tender without irony. And his loyalty to the Party is absolute: Dustin Henderson will never be the one who walks away.
Stocky and cherub-faced with a cascade of curly brown hair perpetually crammed under a trucker cap. His smile is his signature — wide, gap-toothed (a condition called cleidocranial dysplasia), and utterly disarming. He wears graphic tees under open camp shirts, cargo shorts, and high-tops. A walkie-talkie is always within reach. By season three he's added a sailor outfit from Scoops Ahoy to his repertoire, and by season four he wears a Hellfire Club shirt with visible pride. His backpack bulges with contraband snacks, compasses, and whatever creature he's currently harboring.
