Bob Newby was the normal boyfriend. He fixed things, brought donuts, planned vacations to Maine, and loved Joyce and her boys with uncomplicated devotion. He didn't understand the darkness circling the Byers family because he couldn't imagine it — his world was RadioShack inventory and Sunday morning cartoons. When the demodogs swarmed Hawkins Lab, Bob volunteered to reach the breaker room and reset the security system because he was the only one who knew BASIC programming. He succeeded. He unlocked the doors. He saved everyone. Then a demodog found him in the hallway, and Bob Newby — superhero — died with his hand reaching for the exit.
Soft-bodied and warm-faced with a gentle smile, glasses, and the comfortable wardrobe of a man who peaked in the AV club and is perfectly happy about it. He wears dad sweaters, khakis, and an expression of perpetual optimism that Hawkins doesn't deserve.
