He bonded with Murray over vodka and translation difficulties, discovered cherry Slurpees with the wonder of a child, and was shot at the Hawkins Fun Fair by a Russian assassin before he could testify. His death is senseless and cruel — the show's reminder that the Cold War killed kind people as readily as monsters did.
