Deep, narrow valleys between the plateaus of the Shattered Plains — dark, flooded during highstorms, and hiding both danger and unexpected intimacy.
The chasms are the negative space of the Shattered Plains — everything the plateaus aren't. Dark where the surface is bright, narrow where the top is open, and absolutely lethal during a highstorm when water rushes through them in a wall of force that pulverizes anything in its path. Dead bridgemen and soldiers wash through the chasms regularly, their equipment scavenged by those desperate or brave enough to descend. Kaladin learned to fight chasmfiends down here. Shallan and Kaladin were trapped in the chasms together after a bridge collapse, and the days they spent finding their way out — drawing maps, fighting off creatures, slowly revealing themselves to each other — became a turning point for both of them. The chasms strip away pretense. There's no rank, no eye color, no politics in the dark. Just survival.
Narrow stone corridors between sheer walls that rise hundreds of feet. Dim light filters from above, casting everything in grey-green shadow. The floors are uneven, littered with storm debris, bones of fallen soldiers, and the occasional chasmfiend limb. Water pools in low sections, and moss grows where light reaches.
