Shinovar

Location from The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

The western land behind the mountains, shielded from highstorms — a place with soil, grass, and horses that looks like another world entirely. Szeth's homeland, where stone is sacred.

Shinovar is Roshar's anomaly. Protected from highstorms by the towering Misted Mountains, it has developed an ecosystem utterly different from the rest of the continent — topsoil, non-retracting grass, animals without carapace, and weather patterns that Easterners would find impossibly gentle. The Shin people revere stone as the body of their god, refuse to walk on it when possible, and view the rest of Roshar's cavalier treatment of rock as a form of blasphemy. The Shin guard the Honorblades — the weapons of the Heralds — in a hidden monastery, and their Truthless tradition punishes heretics by making them obey anyone who holds their Oathstone. Szeth was made Truthless for claiming the Voidbringers would return, which turned out to be true. Shinovar's isolation has made it mysterious to other Rosharans, who find the Shin strange and their homeland stranger — a land where the ground is soft, the air is calm, and nothing has a shell.

Appearance

Green rolling hills with actual soil and grass that doesn't retract. Horses, chickens, and other Shin animals (which Rosharans call exotic) graze in open fields. Mountains to the east block the highstorms, creating a microclimate unlike anywhere else on Roshar. Stone buildings are rare — the Shin consider stone sacred and walk only on wood or grass.
